E-bikes, or electric bikes, work by combining traditional bicycle components with an electric motor, battery, and control system to assist the rider's pedalling. Here's a breakdown of how e-bikes function:

Electric Motor: The motor is the core component that provides power assistance. It can be located in the front wheel hub, rear wheel hub, or integrated into the bike's crankshaft (mid-drive motor). When the rider pedals, the motor activates to provide additional power, making pedalling easier and more efficient, especially on inclines or over long distances.

Battery: The battery powers the electric motor and is usually rechargeable and removable for convenience. Most e-bike batteries are lithium-ion, offering a balance of weight, capacity, and longevity. Depending on the model, a fully charged battery can provide a range of 20 to 100 miles, depending on factors like the level of assistance used, terrain, and rider weight.

Pedal Assist and Throttle: E-bikes typically have a pedal-assist system (PAS) and sometimes a throttle. The PAS uses sensors to detect the rider's pedalling speed and force, adjusting the motor's power output accordingly. This system often features multiple levels of assistance, allowing riders to choose how much help they want from the motor.

Control System: The control system, often integrated into the handlebars, allows the rider to manage the e-bike's settings. This includes turning the motor on and off, selecting the level of pedal assist, and monitoring battery life. Advanced systems may include digital displays showing speed, distance travelled, and remaining battery charge.

By combining these components, e-bikes offer a seamless blend of manual cycling and motorized assistance, providing a versatile and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or enjoying a leisurely ride, e-bikes enhance the cycling experience by reducing effort and extending range.

An electric scooter, or e-scooter, is a compact, battery-powered vehicle designed for urban commuting and short-distance travel. Featuring a slim, lightweight frame, electric scooters are equipped with a motor and a rechargeable battery that powers the wheels, providing a smooth and efficient ride.

Electric scooters are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas-powered vehicles, producing zero emissions and significantly reducing your carbon footprint. They are ideal for navigating busy city streets, offering a convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation. Many electric scooters come with advanced features like LED lights for visibility, digital displays for speed and battery life, and various speed settings to accommodate different riding conditions.

The popularity of electric scooters is growing rapidly due to their convenience, affordability, and
environmental benefits. They are perfect for last-mile connectivity, short commutes, and quick errands. Whether you're looking to reduce your environmental impact, save on transportation costs, or simply enjoy a fun and practical way to get around, electric scooters offer a versatile and green transportation option.

The vast majority of our e-bikes have removable batteries which of course makes it much more convenient to charge the battery. If in doubt, please get in touch and let us know which model you’re interested in.

The cost to charge an electric bike depends on several factors, including the capacity of the battery, the cost of electricity in your area, and the efficiency of the charging process. If we assume a 10.4Ah/36V battery which is pretty standard, it would cost around £0.11 to fully charge!

Yes. Our electric bikes are around 18-20kg whereas a conventional mountain bike is around 11kg.

Yes, if you don’t need the assistance of the motor you can switch it off and save it for the hills!

Definitely, most e-bikes work just fine in the rain (which is lucky for those of us in the UK!) Look out for IPX5 Water Resistance in the ‘Specifications’ section on the product webpage which will confirm that no splashes or puddles will do any harm to the bike. If you cannot find this info, please get in touch and we can dig into this for you.

We would always advise you to check the manufacturer manual and instructions before using your bike in the rain however, just to be sure.

Yes, e-bikes are environmentally friendly compared to traditional motor vehicles. They produce zero emissions while in use, helping to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. E-bikes are highly energy-efficient, requiring significantly less energy to charge than the fuel needed for cars. Additionally, they can help decrease traffic congestion and reliance on fossil fuels, further contributing to environmental sustainability.

In addition, e-bikes encourage more people to use bicycles for commuting and short trips, which can reduce the overall number of cars on the road. This shift not only lowers the carbon footprint but also promotes healthier lifestyles. By choosing e-bikes over cars for daily transportation, individuals can make a positive impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Usage and Maintenance

This varies depending on the battery capacity of your bike and is also affected by many factors such as terrain, rider weight and headwind, however on average around 30 miles.

You’re looking at anywhere between 4-6 hours for most electric bikes to be fully charged.

Most batteries can last between 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles and for the average user riding their e-bike several times a week, you can expect the battery to last around 3-5 years.

Yes, they are! They share a lot of maintenance similarities with a conventional bike such tyre pressure, break maintenance and checking bolts and nuts. The main thing to consider when maintaining an e-bike is the care of the battery. To ensure the longevity and performance of your e-bike battery, it's crucial to charge it properly and store it correctly. Always use the manufacturer-provided charger and avoid letting the battery fully discharge frequently; instead, keep it between 20% and 80% charged. Charge the battery at room temperature to prevent damage from extreme heat or cold. If you're storing the bike for an extended period, maintain the battery at about 50% charge and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Regular use is also important for battery health; if you don't ride the bike for a while, charge the battery periodically. Additionally, ensure the battery and its connections are clean and free from corrosion, and check that all cables and connectors are secure. Following these steps can help extend your battery's lifespan and maintain its performance.

In the UK, you must be over 14 years old to legally ride an electric bike.

It depends on how the e-bike is to be used. In order for the electric bike to be road legal the following must apply:

  • As far as power, the EAPC rules state that to be compliant with UK rules and regulations the e-bike must have pedals and these pedals must be used by the rider to propel the bike.
  • The EAPC also states that the
maximum power output of the motor should not exceed 250 watts.
  • The electric motor should not
be able to generate speeds of more than 15.5mph (25 km/h).

If the bike does not comply with the above specifications, it is not road legal.

No, there is no requirement to be insured to ride an electric bike in the UK. Just like any of your valuable items, we’d recommend you insure your bike so it is covered form theft or accidental damage.

Safety and Security

When riding an e-bike, it’s essential to prioritise safety to ensure a smooth and secure experience. Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head in case of an accident. Additionally, wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility to other road users, especially in low-light conditions. Ensure your e-bike is equipped with front and rear lights and use them when riding in the dark or during poor weather conditions.

Regularly check your e-bike to make sure it’s in good working condition. Inspect the brakes, tires, and battery before each ride. Follow the local traffic laws and regulations, and stay within designated cycling lanes when available. Be mindful of your speed, particularly in crowded or pedestrian-heavy areas, and always signal your intentions when turning or stopping to communicate with other road users effectively.

To prevent e-bike theft, invest in a high-quality lock such as a U-lock or heavy-duty chain lock, and always secure the frame and at least one wheel to a fixed, immovable object. Using multiple locks that require different tools to break can further deter thieves. Opt for well-lit, busy areas with high foot traffic when parking your e-bike, and avoid leaving it in isolated places for long periods. Additionally, secure any removable parts like lights or batteries by taking them with you, and consider installing a bike alarm and GPS tracking device for added security.

At home, store your e-bike in a secure location such as a locked garage or inside your home, and use a lock if it's kept in a shared area. Personalise your e-bike with unique identifiers, register it with a local or national bike registry, and keep detailed records, including serial numbers and photographs, to aid in recovery if stolen. These steps can significantly reduce the risk of theft and improve the chances of retrieving your e-bike if it is stolen.
